Iceland in December: Winter, Christmas and Aurora

A trip shaped by darkness

December has very limited daylight, particularly around the winter solstice. That does not make the trip empty: soft daytime light can be beautiful, Reykjavík feels festive and the long nights create extended aurora opportunities. It does mean that driving-heavy itineraries need to shrink.

Choose one or two bases and keep transfers simple. Reykjavík works for food, culture and guided day tours; a carefully chosen South Coast overnight can add landscape without forcing a long same-day return.

Booking around the holidays

Christmas and New Year opening hours affect shops, restaurants, transport and tours. Confirm exact operating dates and reserve important meals or transfers. Do not assume public transport follows an ordinary timetable.

Weather can still override any reservation. Read cancellation and rescheduling terms, especially for aurora and outdoor activities.

Comfort and safety

Warm layers, a waterproof shell, gloves, hat and shoes with traction matter more than a fashionable single coat. Reflective details are useful during dark urban walks.

Treat New Year fireworks and winter roads as separate safety considerations. Use official guidance and avoid stopping a vehicle in unsafe places for aurora photographs.
